CARF Brazil was established by Gregory J. Smith in São Paulo, in 1993. Gregory had already established The Children At Risk Foundation – CARF Norway in 1992, determined to benefit the street children of Brazil by defending their rights and offering them a dignified and definitive solution so that they could live and grow within a family-oriented context and healthy social environment.

In the initial years, Gregory gained valuable practical experience by living with the children on the streets and motivating them to leave such a negative and self-destructive environment, offering them an alternative home and lifestyle on a smallholding in the urban periphery of Diadema/SP.

During the last decade, the experience gained guided the organisation to create its Street Migration Prevention Programme to prevent vulnerable children and young people at risk from running away from their homes to live on the streets, developing this together with at-risk community children and abandoned street children in the process of leaving the streets. The essence of the work lies in the interest taken in and the knowledge of the personal situation of each child or young person, from the very first moment he or she becomes involved with our organisation.

Due to the success of this programme, CARF was forced to seek new solutions to cope with growing demands and in 2001 the Hummingbird Activity Centre became a reality. This allowed the organisation to expand its capacity from 80 children and young people to more than 600 attended in 2004.

CARF’s Street Migration Prevention Program is aimed at helping former street children and other at-risk community children in São Paulo, creating pathways of opportunity and a more dignified life. Most of their target population come from one of the most deprived and violent areas in the entire state of São Paulo, in situations of extreme poverty and social vulnerability. Many have special needs and require closer attention due to their unstructured family situation, which in some cases causes total neglect.

In addition, the centre supports the demands of our rehabilitation programme, serving the needs of already rescued street children or those coming off the streets. The programmes of the Hummingbird Activity Centre are primarily preventive in nature and promote the confidence, character, competence, and ‘connectedness’ of that population to their family, peers, and community. They provide a range of support and services in such areas as vocational training, health education, recreation, cultural understanding – tolerance and expansion, racial reconciliation, artistic expression, environmental awareness, and the development of youth leadership involving conflict resolution and decision-making skills.

The main Programmes carried out at present at the Hummingbird Activity Centre can be divided into 3 main groups:

Sporting Activities – These promote corporal skills, spacial and bodily awareness, integration, team work, concentration, discipline and help cultivate a competitive spirit, all concepts that are essential for social interaction, living together and personal health care.

Artistic and Cultural Development – These cater for the cultural, artistic and aesthetic qualities of life with an emphasis on development of the creative potential, awakening skills and talents that, when used with free expression, can become useful instruments of self-development, communication and training.

Vocational Training – These allow training through constructive and interactive work, awakening vocations and talents through guidance and access to specialist spheres, dynamics and techniques as well as encouraging the use of professional equipment and material.

The stated aim of the Hummingbird Street Migration Prevention Programme, to work for social inclusion without discrimination and its recognised competence in carrying out projects, is the distinguishing feature of their work on social intervention. Through the serious commitment and dedication with which they carry out our work, and the good results they have had in cooperative projects with other agencies, the partnerships and dialogues with CARF as an external agent for cooperative ventures has grown and strengthened, however limited funding creates certain restraints for their further expansion.

The waiting list for vacancies in programmes during 2004, numbered more than 1,000 children and young people registered. Unfortunately they don’t have the capacity to help all those who come to them. All they can do is to take on as much as possible in order to transform in a positive way the lives of these children and young people.

VISION: to become a referential solution, not only for street children, but also for any other child at risk in Brazil or elsewhere in the world, but to do that they also depend on your help. Visit ChildrenAtRisk-STREETKIDS for more details and updates on their work in Brazil.

The furniture hub of Arapongas, city in the southern Brazilian state of Paraná, caught the attention of Arab importers.
Last week, the entrepreneur
Tritat Khaled was in Brazil to participate in an international business roundtable, which gathered 30 furniture manufacturers from the region and international buyers from 16 countries. As well as the Algerian, visiting Arapongas were buyers from South Africa, Argentina, Belgium, Chile, Cuba, El Salvador, Ecuador, United States, Guatemala, England, Malta, Namibia, Scotland and Uruguay.

As it was a business meeting, some companies settled orders on the spot. The furniture factory Moval, for example, is already adapting its products to the needs of the Algerian importer. ‘Negotiation is well under way. We are already providing the alterations in the bed measures, from 1.40m to 1.60m wide,’ says the exports manager at the company, Adilson Rodrigues.

This isn’t going to be the factory’s first sales to the Middle East. Moval has already participated in two editions of the furniture fair Index, in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, in 2003 and 2005. ‘We have made sporadic exports of closets to the Emirates. Now with the adaptations in the beds I believe we will have greater chances of selling complete sets as these that are going to be sent to Algeria,’ says the manager.

‘We know of the great purchase potential in the Arab market and we hope to increase considerably the business volume already in the next few months,’ states Rodrigues. Moval manufactures 120,000 pieces per month and generates 900 direct jobs in two factory units. Of the total produced, about 15% is exported to more than 30 countries.

This was the fifth edition of the international roundtable in the region and the second one held outside fairs of the furniture sector. During the meeting, the furniture producers also exhibit their products in a showroom, which helps evaluation, on behalf of the buyers, of the characteristics and quality of the products.

The initiative is part of the Projeto Comprador - meaning Buyer’s Project in Portuguese – by the Brazilian Furniture Industry Association (Abimóvel), the Arapongas Furniture Industry Union (Sima), the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex) and the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae) of Paraná.

The idea is to put the furniture makers of the cities of Arapongas, Cambé, Apucarana, Rolândia e Salbádia, which are group-organized, in touch with the international market, expanding business and allowing for improvements in the quality of the furniture to meet the demands in these markets.

Patricia Slater:

Although most of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas are controlled by drug gangs, while the residents live in constant fear, I was intent on giving my friend a trip to Rio she would not forget, so we checked into a favela B&B.

They came at us as if we were Father Christmas bearing gifts. Going to a favela – the Brazilian word for a shanty town on the side of a hill – is scary enough without lots of barefoot and wide-eyed.

However, their curiosity was justified. Before Favelinha became the first hotel to open in the middle of a favela about a year ago, the residents of the favelas had never seen tourists so close to their homes. The thousands of visitors who visit Rio de Janeiro every year usually stay at luxurious hotels on the beach, trying their best to avoid the nearby shanty towns.

When Joanan, an English friend of mine, decided to spend a couple of weeks in Rio, I decided to show her the city I had grown up in. Being Brazilian (and like many of my fellow countrymen) I am always surprised at how little of the ‘real’ Rio visitors actually know.

Alongside, the 5 stars hotels, you’ll find the favelas where more than 20% of Rio’s population live. They are as much a part of the skyline as the statue of Christ, the Redeemer. However, most favelas are controlled by drug gangs, and the residents live in constant fear of them, so it is not surprising that tourists avoid them.

Despite this, I was intent on giving my friend a trip to Rio she would not forget, even if that included a week long heart attack. So I booked us into Pousada Favelinha, a now famous B&B right in the middle of Pereirao – a favela with almost 450 shacks and 1,500 inhabitants. What I hadn’t told her – to keep the adrenaline going – was that Pereirao had been a safe haven since 1999, when the police killed the local drug baron (there’s now a training facility for young cadets here and plenty of police on the streets).

Zico, a little boy carried our luggage (for a small tip) and showed us the way to the Pousada Favelinha. On the way he stopped to chat to a shady character, who as my friend described later, made the gangsters in the soap, East Enders look like Blue Peter presenters. Zico later explained: ‘That was Carlos. He used to run the drug business here. But don’t worry, he’s cool. These days he’s always saying he wants to meet one of Favelinha’s European guests. He wants a new girlfriend.’ My friend quickly decided it was time we saw our room.

Now, my friend is one of those people with a penchant for boutique hotels, known in our circle of friends for the amount of times she will switch rooms if she sees as much as 2 little ants crawling up a wall. So I was surprised to find she absolutely loved the simplicity of our room and its great view. She could not believe what she saw from the window. There was the Guanabara Bay and the Sugar Loaf, sights normally seen from exclusive penthouses. She also spotted the beach, and gave me that hungry dog look that said, ‘Please, please, please take me there now.’

We unpacked, put on our bikinis, and headed for the gleaming white sand of Barra da Tijuca in one of Rio’s youngest neighbourhood. We happily avoided the nearby Copacabana beach, as it’s dirty and dangerous. Barra da Tijuca is a great beach, as there is only one international hotel nearby making tourists an unusual sight, therefore the possibility of being ripped off by coconut sellers is slim. People from all parts of Rio come here to meet their friends and arrange their night out. My friend rightly compared it to going to the pub back home; only this form of socialising doesn’t leave you smelling of cigarette smoke.

This is also a very democratic beach – the Adonis lying in the sun next to you could come from one of the US$1 million apartments across the street or a run-down shack on the nearby hill. I suspect my friend couldn’t care less where the hunk standing next to us came from, as she tried to communicate with him to arrange to meet later that night at a samba school.

We also found the energy of the samba rhythm infectious, and we couldn’t resist the many invitations from the dancers to try out on the dance floor. Needless, to say along with many exotic cocktails, we couldn’t remember much of our samba evening the next day.

What my friend most remembered about that night was the way the favela looked on our way back to the hotel. It was as if everyone was waiting up to see we got back safely as the lights seemed to be on in every one of the little houses on the hill. My friend was hypnotised and overwhelmed. I knew she would feel this way, but still I couldn’t help but be proud of how Rio had treated her on her first day; even though we were in the heart of such a poor community, the residents were very rich in hospitality and genuine warmth. I have a feeling my friend will be back.
